§ 1. The Sol-to-Gel Chemical Reaction
Alginate sets via cross-linking between soluble sodium alginate and calcium sulfate dihydrate, regulated by trisodium phosphate retarder. Controlling water temperature is key: every 2°C change alters gelation time by 20–30 seconds. Cold water extends working time in warm operatory conditions.
§ 2. The Health and Quality Benefits of Dust-Free Chemistry
Traditional alginate powders release respirable silica dust containing crystalline diatomaceous earth, which poses inhalation risks for dental assistants. Hygedent coats powder granules with food-grade glycols to eliminate airborne dust during dispensing while speeding water absorption.
§ 3. Syneresis, Imbibition, and Pouring Protocols
Hydrocolloids are susceptible to syneresis (water exudation) and imbibition (water swelling). Impressions should be rinsed, disinfected, wrapped in a damp paper towel, and poured with Type III stone within 10–12 minutes to maintain sub-50-micron accuracy.
